Bolivar’s Pioneer Oil Week – June 23 – June 30

May 23, 2019

Pioneers, those who made the way before us for the rest of us. They went through personal sacrifices, faced unknown dangers, and blazed roads by hand and horse through rough land for ease of use for others to follow. Combining the oil industry of Allegany County with the early pioneers has seen Bolivar’s Pioneer Oil Week become one of the must-do annual summer events in the county.

Events start on Sunday with the Genesee Valley Antique Tractor Pull. Bring your chairs and pick your spot for some tense competition. You will feel the ground vibrate, and see the tractors rise off the ground when the pull gets harder, trying to dig in for just a few inches more. There is a chicken barbecue and vendors too, so bring the family and enjoy the afternoon.

at the Bolivar American Legion. How is your card playing skills? Monday is the Euchre Tournament at the Bolivar American Legion.

Want to catch up with your neighbors and meet new ones? Tuesday night is the Community Picnic in Shaner Field. It’s a bring-a-dish-to-pass event, and there’s free hot dogs and beverages! Afterwards sit and relax and watch the youngest of the town compete in the Children’s Tractor Pull for the chance of winning a trophy.

Wednesday is the spaghetti dinner at the United Methodist Church. It is hosted by the local Boy Scouts, and you will not go away hungry. It’s a nominal fee for such a great dinner, and take outs are available.

Thursday gets very busy. The Strawberry Shortcake Festival is going on next door in Richburg at the Historical Society building; the History Scavenger Hunt is happening in Bolivar; and to end the day, people gather in the parking lot between the Community Bank and the Bolivar Library for a family movie night—with popcorn!

Friday is the annual New York State Oil Producer’s Association “Wall of Fame” inductions which honors those of the oil industry who were essential parts of it (free to the public).

It is followed with a Wine and Cheese tasting event ($). It all takes place at the Oil Museum Extension at the Hahn and Schaffner Building.

Sunday is the grand parade starting at 10am, the Duck Race, the Summer Cruise Car Show, and a chicken barbecue at the Bolivar Fire Department. In the evening at the Bolivar Country Club is the annual high school reunion. And Sunday brings the week to an end with the graduation of the 2019 Bolivar-Richburg Central School class.
