Canaseraga’s Klipnocky – Saturday September 22, 2019
August 9, 2019
Canaseraga is in the most Northeastern part of Allegany County. It is often one that is forgotten by many, but believe me when I say this, the people who live there are some of the most down-to-earth type you will ever come across. They are friendly, full of life, and have wonderful stories to tell you. Life in Canaseraga is one of simplicity and rural, but with all of the amenities of the modern age.
Their annual Canaseraga Fall Harvest Festival began in 1999 by a group of residents interested in economic development in the Canaseraga area. This group has changed and grown through the years.
It takes place on the third full weekend of September in the Canaseraga Village Park, rain or shine. The festival provides entertainment, crafts, fundraising opportunities, and lots of food and fun!
The 2019 Canaseraga Fall Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, September 21st from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, September 22nd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to food and craft vendors, a number of activities are planned for family fun, and the bandstand offers a variety of talent all weekend long with local musicians and entertainers.
Past years have seen the many talents of the Hairy Women of Klipknocky, a group of women who only come to town once a year in search of a husband. They are legendary to the area and no one knows for sure if they are indeed women as some of them definitely have characteristics of men. The audience doesn’t seem to mind at all. Their hairy appearances and backwoods fashion style are all part of the experience of the festival, and they are loved!
You will probably come across the actual Mayor of Klipknocky, who is also serves as Burns’ Town Superintendent in his down time. You’ll recognize him by his wonderful top-hat and questionably furry-tails coat. Don’t judge how he speaks or his spelling as he spells like he hears it—not how it should be such has when he performs his mayrin’ job.
On Friday, Canaseraga Branch of Steuben Trust on Main Street holds Customer Appreciation Day where customers enjoy free lunch to kick off the Festival Weekend.
Other events of the past have included tethered balloon rides, hay bale racing, talent shows, scarecrow walks, and of course the well-attended car show.
The vendors are always a nice assortment with excellent food offerings and wide variety of fresh in-season produce and products. Sawdust Pile Treasure Dig for the kids, dig for buried treasure…and cash; Pulled Pork BBQ and a Stearn’s Chicken BBQ handled by upperclassmen of Canaseraga Central School; Birdsall Praise Band of the Birdsall Community Church; and local musicians start the day Sunday morning with the Community Song Service with old-time hymns.
Canaseraga’s population doubles on the weekend of the festival, and it has become one of the most talked about events in the area. There is always a good time happening at this festival. It is a family-fun event.
So why not make a trip to the Canaseraga Harvest Festival this year for a wonderful, entertaining and enjoyable time of fun!!!
